Last week in our blog we spoke about honoring your precious Habibi Bear puppy, the Original Teddy Bear puppy dog, in a few different ways.
- Remembering Your Habibi Bear Puppy is a baby whose life is measured in weeks and months. Small breed puppies do mature faster than Standard size puppies, but they are puppies all the same. Let’s cut our pups some slack and keep in mind the relatively short time they’ve been on earth and adjust our expectations accordingly.
- Remember or Educate yourself and your family on what your Habibi Bear puppy is physically able (ability) and developmentally able (capability) to do. Just as we cannot expect two-year-old child to read and write or ride a bike, be aware of puppy milestones and developmental stages so we don’t mistake playfulness, normal rambunctiousness, or overstimulation for aggressive behaviors. We do our pups a disservice when we expect behaviors that are not in alignment with what they are able to achieve, ending in frustration for you and puppy.
- Remember to set puppy up for success. This means giving them their own space where they can hone their self-soothing behaviors and give them free access to it so they don’t get overstimulated. When puppy seeks out a quiet space to calm down, they are learning several important things: self-mastery (learning to control their impulses and actions), self-awareness (the need to retreat, calm down and recharge), and how to self-soothe (taking a break in play and being calm, catching their breath). Learn the signs of an overstimulated puppy (panting, shaking, scratching, jumping and an inability to settle or sit), and give them a chance for a time out in their crate, so their little developing brain can turn off and slow down.
- When issues do arise, remember to ask yourself if you are meeting puppy’s needs, or are you focused on what puppy can do for you. Because we are the leaders in ability, awareness and standard intelligence, the burden is on us to reflect, evaluate the situation and start on a journey of course correction so everyone, human and canine, can live together and thrive!
